Topic: Moral Injury

Speaker: Mark R. Flores, M.Div, BCC, Chaplain, Central Virginia Veterans Affairs Health Care System Chaplain Service

About Our Speaker:

Chaplain Mark Flores serves as a staff chaplain for the Central Virginia Veterans Affairs Health Care System, providing spiritual care for hospice and palliative care, geriatric care, and short-term rehab care patients at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VAMC.

About Our Program:

It is important to understand that the concept of moral injury is a relatively new term as a stimulus for specific treatment modalities. While the ideas of guilt and shame in relation to wartime experiences have been written about for centuries, we are only in the last decade applying an evidence base and a research perspective to try to understand how to most accurately defined moral injury as well as to most effectively treat moral injury.  There are many definitions of moral injury in the literature today, but one of the definitions that has received the most evidence in terms of mapping onto treatment, is the one that holds that events that are considered moral injuries if they transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. Another aspect of this definition is that moral injury describes the harmful psycho – spiritual aftermath of exposure to such events.

Program Objectives:

  • Define Moral Injury
  • Identify how Moral Injury develops
  • Discuss how to support those with Moral Injury
