CMSA Chesapeake held an annual all day conference titled "Case Management - A Compass for Change" to celebrate Case Mangement Week. More than 140 case managers heard Nancy Skinner discuss Transitions of Care and Norm Bossio discuss change. There were also numerous breakout sessions to hear about legal issues, workers comp, clinical updates and other topics. Everyone enjoyed a day of high quality education programs and networking.


The VA Hospital of Baltimore held their first celebration of Case Management Week. The week was filled with activities including a breakfast, a presentation to the hospital administration on the role of case managers , an ice scream social and a nursing Grand Rounds  to discuss the evolution of the department from a small department to a larger one covering all units and areas of specialization. Janet Reinsel, president of the Chesapeake CMSA , also discussed case management as the essential link in quality healthcare.

Michelle Hawkins, RN, MSN, MBA, CCM just added DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) to her credentials. She is a Director of Care Management at Johns Hopkins HealthCare.

They were welcoming back Iraqi vets and the numerous other vets that are on their caseload.
This case management department held the first ever Case Management Week in 2009. It was a huge success. I know because I was there.

The Case Management Society of America (CMSA) had their first Public Policy Workshop in Washington, D.C., on April 27-28, 2010. Eighty-five case managers from across the country came to learn about the legislative process and how they can work with congressional leaders in making their issues and concerns known.

The first day of the workshop speakers came in and talked about: How to influence the legislative process. The role of individuals in the legislative process. The state legislative process. The Case Management Model Act, and Maximizing your time on the Hill.

Day two provided case managers the opportunity to visit with their congressional leaders and share their stories about the health care process and issues they have identified and would like to see addressed. Seventy-eight congressional visits were scheduled, during which case managers explained: Membership within the Case Management Society of America. The role of a case manager. Who can call themselves case managers. CMSA Standards of Practice 2010. The Case Management Model Act, and the impact of the National Transitions of Care Coalition.

As case managers shared their experiences of the day at the debriefing session on Tuesday afternoon, it was easy to see the impact they made and how eager Senators and Representatives were to interact with these true health care professionals. We had a great time networking with other case managers from all over the US. Now is the time we need to be coming together and trying to make an impact on HealthCare Reform. We need to be leaders and teach our legislators what Case Management can bring to the table. (Some of this information came from Peggy Leonard, MS, RN-C, FNP, and Carol A.
